Information and specs on the First Gen Pontiac Firebird (1967-1969)

1967 Pontiac Firebird

On February 23, 1967, the first Firebird came off of the production line and into the world of sales. Consumers were attacking this new style of car which came in both a coupe and a convertible. It was notorious for its beaked hood and slitted GTO-like taillights, some of the parts however, such as the rear quarter panels (which pontiac made them there own by inserting vents) were from the Chevrolet Camaro.(Pontiac was actually a branch off of Chevrolet). Pontiac did build their own engines though which included the:

  • 230-cubic inch (3.8- liter) V6; Approx. 165 HP(horse power) through a single carburator. Also came in "sprint" package; Approx. 215 HP through four-barrel carburator; Higher compression ratio.
  • 326-cubic inch V8; Approx. 285 HP; Four barrel carb.; Higher compression
  • 400-cubic inch V8; Approx. 325 HP; Ram Air cold-induction

1968 Pontiac Firebird

  • 350-cubic inch V8; Two-barrel Approx. 265 HP; Four-barrel Approx. 320 HP
  • 400-cubic inch V8(upgraded since 67'); Regular version Approx. 330 HP; H.O.(high output) version Approx. 335 HP; H.O. Ram Air version Approx. 335 HP; Ram Air II version Approx. 340 HP
  • Base model now at 175 HP and Sprint version now at 215 HP

1969 Pontiac Firebird

The 1969 Firebird got a new design with broader fenders and a new front end that seperated the headlights from the grille. The motor was quite the same whith the H.O. 350 gaining 5 horsepower, now at 325. Also a new 400, Ram Air IV with an output of about 345 horsepower now. Atop all of that, came in the Trans Am. The Trans Am(which was brand new in 69')asnt all that special when it came to power, but its looks made it stand out. It had a special dual intake scooped hood, deck spoiler, fender vents, and white and blue stripe paint scheme. It came in a Ram Air III making 335 horsepower, or Ram Air IV 400 V8.
